A SHORT HISTORY

In the year 2000, the street fête celebrated it's 25th anniversary. For it was in 1975 that Francis Sultani had the idea of organizing a fête in the rue de la Poste with the help of other shopkeepers in the street. This first edition only had about twenty stands. A fairly good result for a trial run. So it came as no surprise that the following year that there were many more stands and attractions. The Street Fêtes became one of the Verbier Summer's traditional high points each third Saturday in July and second Saturday in August.

At the request of the Tourist Office, the Fête's committee organized the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Society for the Development of Verbier in 1987. The celebrations, held over three days over the weekend of the 1st August (the Swiss national holiday), were a major success, with the benevolent participation of the French Swiss Radio and Television and Jean-Charles Simon (a popular animator) as official speaker.

After twenty years, Messrs. Sultani et Midol-Monnet retired. The steering committee was then composed of Christophe Sempéré (president), Daniel Guinnard (admin), and Alan Woolman (animation who replaced Francis for a time as president).

In 2001, it was decided to move the fête to the resort's car park in the centre of town, as this allowed more flexibility and the possibility of adding more and larger stands. Therefore there is now a central area for the fairground, making it safer for the children. More seating space and better accessibility to the stands makes it easier for the public.

From 2003 Francis Sultani returned the committee replacing Alan Woolman, who resigned after such a long stint.
